Video: All Yellowstone entrances closed temporarily due to heavy flooding, rockslides, extremely

Due to “very hazardous conditions” caused by “record” rainfall and flooding, Yellowstone National Park announced on Monday that all park entrances are temporarily closed.

In a Facebook post, the park said, “Effective immediately, all entrances to Yellowstone National Park are temporarily CLOSED due to major flooding, rockslides, and mudslides on roadways from recent extraordinary quantities of rainfall and flooding.”
“Until the conditions calm and the park can assess damage to roads and bridges,” the post stated, no inbound travel will be allowed. The exits to the north, northeast, west, south, and east have all been closed.

According to a Facebook post from the park, multiple areas of the park are also without electricity.

“With more rain anticipated, the park does not want huge numbers of day-use guests stranded in the park,” according to the article.

The Yellowstone River is at “beyond record levels,” according to the National Park Service.
Those planning a trip to Yellowstone in the coming weeks should keep an eye on road conditions.

Before posting the wider closure, the park noted in a news release that roads in the northern area of the park will be temporarily blocked for “an extended length of time.”

“Preliminary evaluations reveal many sections of road in the park have been washed out between Gardiner and Cooke City, Montana, and multiple bridges may be compromised,” according to the announcement, which also stated that guests in that area have been evacuated.

On Monday, the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the area, advising campers and hikers to stay away from streams and creeks. According to the NWS, flooding “induced by rain and snowmelt” is likely along the Gardiner River.

The park’s Mammoth, Osprey Falls, Indian Creek Campground, and Lava Creek Campgrounds are all expected to be flooded, according to the NWS.
